"SORRY MATE, I DIDNT SEE YOU"

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, this is the most common excuse from drivers causing accidents.

In a recent poll conducted by the Institute, 58% of drivers were ‘cut up’ by another road user who didn’t look properly. Astonishingly , 48% of these near misses took place in 30 mile per hour zones.

These incidents are known as SMIDSY’s – ‘sorry mate, I didn’t see you’ – which is often the reaction of the perpetrator when these events result in accidents.

Failure to look is a contributory factor in 29% of serious collisions and 36% of slight accidents according to research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Motorcyclists and pedal cyclists would appear to be the worst affected by SMIDSEY’s.  83% of drivers said that these incidents would decrease by improving drivers’ awareness of Motorcyclist’s with 52% of drivers admitting to having had a near miss with a pedal cyclist.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists chief executive Simon Best said, “SMIDSEY moments are happening far to often, and very few people are prepared to take responsibility for their part in them. It’s always someone else’s fault. All road users need to be more aware of who they are sharing the road with, and the risks they present.”

The IAM recommends these top tips for drivers:

 Keep an eye out for motorcyclists and pedal cyclists and give them extra space.
 Use your mirrors so you see bikes approaching from behind. In particular when you are changing lanes, especially in traffic queues.
 If a motorcyclist or pedal cyclist is trying is trying to get past in heavy traffic, let them. Don’t try to hinder their progress because you are stuck.
 Leave pedal cyclists enough room when you pass them to allow them to move out to negotiate drains and potholes.

THINK BIKE !
