BLING DUMMIES

Blog Author: Simon Smith BA (Hons)

There  has been an increasing number of reports in relation to the sale of “bling” baby products, where these appear to be essentially conventional baby products, dummies, bottles, bowls, etc. manufactured by reputable companies that are then adapted post production by the attachment of small diamante pieces.

Reports to date would indicate that the parties responsible for making these adaptations have yet to be identified but it is understood that Trading Standards are pursuing enquiries.  However, initial indications are that these are largely being adapted at home and then sold on the internet so the parties responsible may be very difficult to locate.

It is reported that these are not items that have been manufactured, tested or retailed after being properly and thoroughly tested and there is a more than significant risk that the glue attaching the small diamante pieces will fail or they will simply be knocked off.

Added to this the fact that the sparkly nature of the item will make these particularly attractive to babies and small children and it is easy to see that there is a considerable risk of harm, primarily by way of swallowing or choking on the small pieces.

The Australian government are taking a more proactive role than in the UK, these items have already been banned.

Please take heed that these are potentially harmful products and should be treated as such.

In addition, given the nature of production in the event that your child is affected by one of these products it is quiet likely that there will be no legal redress or possibility of enforcing a claim for compensation, either because the party responsible cannot be traced or they do not have the financial capacity or insurance provision to settle any claim.
