HEADWAY ANNUAL AWARDS
Blog Author: Jeff Logan BSC (HONS)
On Friday 2nd December I had the privilege of attending the Headway Annual Awards Luncheon.
Headway is the leading UK charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury. The charity helps and supports families and individuals affected by brain injury.
James Cracknell, the two-time Olympic gold medal winner is one of the supporters of the charity and his wife Beverley Turner, the journalist and presenter gave a very personal account of how a serious brain injury doesn’t just impact on the injured person, but on their entire family.
James suffered a brain injury following a road traffic accident while training for an endurance event in the USA last year.
The awards recognise and celebrate the selfless dedication and commitment of volunteers who give up their time and energy to Headway. Some of their stories were incredibly moving.
One volunteer for example, explained how her son had died in 1992 as a result of a brain injury following a road traffic accident. A year after the accident she attended her first meeting at Headway Lincolnshire and has been the driving force behind that branch ever since.
Another volunteer has spent the past 11 years caring for her son following a car accident that left him in a coma for several months. Initially he was unable to do anything for himself and required round the clock care. She has provided constant care, love and support for her son and with the help of Headway Cardiff, her son has continued to progress and make a better recovery than any of his doctors predicted.
Perhaps the most moving experience of all was that of Bexx Lines. Bexx was just six years old when a road traffic accident left her fighting for her life. She was in a coma for a month, lost all her memory, and had to relearn how to walk and talk again. Despite difficulties in retaining information, Bexx, now 17, achieved five GCSE’s. She also discovered a natural flair for music. She has written and recorded a song called Smile, which has resulted in CD sales and downloads raising money for Headway Swindon and a local hospital.
What did strike me, perhaps more than anything, was the number of people nominated for awards who had suffered a brain injury as a result of a road traffic accident and how important road safety campaigns like those of Brake, the road safety charity are in trying to educate motorists of the dangers of driving.
