REVIEW INTO ALL COSMETIC PROCEDURES

Blog Author: Lynne Ainsworth LLB (Hons) MA

As pressure on the Health Secretary for England, Andrew Lansley, mounts for more decisive action to help women concerned about PIP breast implants Mr Lansley has recently announced that there will be a new review into all cosmetic procedures, including breast implants and dermal filers.

The review will be lead by NHS medical Director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh whom has advised that his priority is to ensure the safety of the  people who undergo cosmetic surgery.

The Health Secretary implied that the review was prompted by concerns that clinics are not collecting data properly but it follows shortly in the wake of significant fears that some silicone implants could be at risk of rupture after French firm Poly Implant Prothese was closed down for using materials designed for use in mattresses and as many as 40,000 in Britain are believed to be affected.

Sir Bruce stated:

“The vast majority of practitioners in the cosmetic industry are professional and well skilled – but I’m concerned that the sector as a whole does not have the systems for monitoring the results from patients and alerting us to possible problem.”

With approximately 100,000 surgical procedures each year this is a lucrative market worth in excess of £2.0 billion and it is shocking that regulation and governance has not been monitored adequately as the growth of the industry rapidly increased.

The Health Secretary commented that the review could open a “Pandora’s box” but said he would rather tackle the issue proactively instead of waiting for problems to develop later but for some it is already too late.

The NHS has said that it will pay to remove, but not replace, implants if a private clinic refused or no longer existed.
