SUNDAY 15TH JULY WAS NOT A TYPICAL SUNDAY

Blog Author: Jeff Logan BSC (HONS)

I am not accustomed to being up and out of the house by 7.15am on a Sunday but Sunday 15th July was not a typical Sunday because this particular Sunday was the 21st annual DAD event.

For most people DAD will mean a family member but in this context it means Disability Awareness Day. DAD is Europe’s largest “not for profit” voluntary led disability exhibition and is held annually in a huge tented village within the ground of Walton Hall Gardens.

This year Goodmans Law had the privilege of being an exhibitor along with over 200 other organisations and it meant getting our stand set up and ready by 9.00am for the expected 20000 visitors.

The three main aims of DAD are to highlight what statutory, private or voluntary services are available to enable disabled people to be as independent as possible, to promote equipment and aides that could maintain or improve independence not just what is offered by statutory service providers and to provide an opportunity to show what disabled people can do in the field of sport, art and entertainment.

The weather was of course atrocious in the weeks leading up to the event resulting in the wettest ground conditions in the 20 year history of the event but the organisers did a fantastic job in making sure the site didn’t  end up looking like the Glastonbury festival a couple of years ago.

This was my first visit to the event and walking round I was astonished at the size and professionalism of it. There were equipment suppliers, transport, holidays, leisure, employment, support groups and services all exhibiting as well as a sports zone including scuba diving, an arts marquee and family entertainment including a Liverpool based samba band.

If this isn’t an event you have been to before I would definitely recommend putting it in your diary for 2013.

"Hi Jeff I\'m glad you enjoyed the event. As the founder and event co-ordinator it is humbling to read such positive comments. Our first event held in 1992 was intended to be a one off, but its people like you that inspire us to dig deep each year and carry on. With regards to next year, I can confirm that we will be assessing our financial position early December and if the sponsors say yes and the figures add up we will be there again for 2013. Thanks again. Dave "
