LOCAL CAMPAIGNER TO PRESENT PETITION TO DOWNING STREET ON MESH USE

On Thursday, 26th of January, Theresa Hughes will take her petition seeking better regulation of the use of mesh in surgical procedures to Downing Street.

Ms Hughes, who is based in Widnes,  has been a staunch campaigner for reform of the current system for the use of mesh after experiencing problems herself  following a transobturator tape procedure in 2006.  She subsequently created the Meshies United Support Group and hosts a forum to help patients who have suffered from mesh related complications.

The website for Meshies United website and the e-petition can be accessed by clicking here

Ms Hughes’s petition is inviting changes in several areas:

- disclosure of the manufacturers pre-market test data;
- better information to patients on the risks associated with Mesh devices;
- the creation of  a Register for all implanted meshes;
- improved follow up provision.

We hope that the Petition is given the consideration it deserves and support Ms Hughes aims.  For our client’s involved in the Rowland Litigation many issues have arisen in relation to the inappropriate use of meshes and difficulties with their subsequent removal where complications have arisen.  It is important that these devices are properly regulated and practices are optimised to ensure that any risks are minimised.
