PIP IMPLANT NEWS UPDATE

Manufacturer of PIP breast implant, Jean-Claude Mas, arrested

Jean-Claude Mas, manufacturer of the French PIP breast implant, which has caused health concerns across 65 countries, has been arrested on charges of “involuntary injury”.  Mr Mas, 72, has been freed on bail and currently remains at his home in the South of France.

It was believed that Jean-Claude Mas would be charged with manslaughter, however, his lawyer, Yves Haddad, has told Reuters news agency that “on the charge of involuntary homicide (manslaughter), the judge decided that for now there is no link”.

It is hoped that Jean-Claude Mas will be formally investigated, under remand in custody to ensure that he does not leave France during investigations.  Mr Mas, however, has insisted that the PIP breast implants pose no threat to health and has attacked French authorities for offering to pay for their removal because it will put women through a “surgery risk”.

Transform agree to remove implants for free

Transform, which has just over 4,000 UK patients with PIP implants, had originally stated that they would have to pay for their removal, however, they now state that patients who have had their implants fitted since 2001 can have them removed free of charge.  Patients will still, however, have to pay around £2,500 for their replacement.

Patients who have had replacements since 2006 may still be within their warranty period and so would get both removal and replacement for free.

The Hospital Group

The Hospital Group have also announced that patients who have had PIP breast implants fitted between 2001 and 2009 can have them removed free of charge.  Despite this, however, patients will still be charged between £1,500 and £3,500 for replacements.
