WELSH GOVERNMENT TO REPLACE ALL PIP IMPLANTS
The Welsh government announced on Tuesday 10 January that it would remove and replace all PIP implants at their expense, regardless of whether or not the implants were inserted under the NHS or via a private clinic.
The decision carries a number of caveats and in order to have the operation; women must prove they have sought redress from their private clinic, be resident in Wales and be registered with a GP there.
Further information from the Welsh government website , can be found here.
The decision differs from the approach adopted by the British government who are only prepared to remove privately inserted breast implants and are not to replace them.
Welsh Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths explained their reasoning for extending the treatment offer to included replacement:
“Removing the implants and not replacing them could result in unsightly scarring, loose skin, and potentially the accumulation of fluids, need for drainage, and risk of infection.”
The decision is likely to place pressure on the Andrew Landsley to review his announcement made on the 6th January following the results of the inquiry by the PIP breast implant expert group. However, it is understood that of the 40,000 or so patients who have received PIP implants in the UK, only 2000 will fit the criteria set out by the Welsh government and as such the financial costs to the NHS will be far less than if a similar arrangement were to be offered in England.
