SETTLING YOUR CLAIM DIRECTLY
What to do if an Insurance Company tries to settle your claim with you directly.
If you have been involved in an accident, you may find that the insurer of the person to blame calls you directly or even comes to your house. Sometimes, they will offer to settle your claim straightaway. We strongly advise you NOT to do this.
Our experience is that for many clients this is the wrong decision. We have acted for multiple clients who have been offered small amounts of compensation for cases worth much more. We had one elderly lady who received 11 times more that what was offered to her directly.
Insurance companies can be persuasive. Our advice is hold firm and advise them that you wish to speak to an independent solicitor before making a decision.
They may also tell you that they can refer you to their panel solicitor. We advise our clients not to be pushed towards a solicitor chosen by an insurance company. You are entitled to choose your own solicitor who is truly independent of insurance companies.
